Ralph Lauren
Vintage Panerai Collection

American Designer, Ralph Lauren has been a huge vintage Panerai collector for many years, and has amassed quite a collection of rare vintage Panerai watches. The first photo below appears courtesy of Esquire Magazine, and shows one of Ralph Lauren's vintage Panerai watches with a Marina Militare designation on the dial. This beautiful watch is a Reference 6152:1, which was made by Rolex and features a Rolex Brevet winding crown. This photo was taken in the Polo New York Flagship store which was formerly the Rhinelander Mansion.

"The luxury of Panerai grew out of its heritage and the purposefulness of each detail. Panerai watches were not about the latest fashion–they were designed to work in specific conditions. Their form and beauty were secondary to their function; they're rugged, utilitarian and handsome." –Ralph Lauren

The photo above also pictures a Leica M9 camera, which, despite looking like it is a vintage camera, is actually a state-of-the-art digital model which features the smallest full-frame digital sensor. Ralph Lauren has a huge passion for collecting rare items that are timeless and have endured as icons of superb design.

Ralph Lauren also features some of his vintage Panerai watches in ads for his clothing line, and in the Ralph Lauren ad below we see an very rare "Big Egiziano" 60MM vintage Radiomir Panerai 2/56 which was made in 1956, being worn over a leather jacket.

1956 Panerai Big Egiziano
60mm Reference 2/56
Radiomir Panerai Dial Designation
8 Giorni Brevettato [8 Days Patented]
50 Examples Made for Egyptian Navy Commandos

The 1956 Big Egiziano was a monster watch at 60MM and I included a photo below of an original 1956 vintage Panerai Reference 2/56 which featured an 8 day manual movement. Many vintage Panerai collectors love the beautiful curvy lines of this Italian beauty. Panerai recently reissued a similar model named the PAM00341 Egiziano which Sylvester Stallone wears.

According to Christies Auction House "The "Egiziano" Panerai Reference GPF 2/56:

"Following a request of Commander Fawzi of the Egyptian Navy who attended the Commando School of the Italian Navy, Panerai developed the legendary reference GPF 2/56, its internal code derived from the month and year of its projection, February 1956.

Nicknamed the "Egiziano" (Italian for "Egyptian") this model is the largest of all Panerai wristwatches ever made with an impressive diameter of 60 mm. It furthermore featured a revolving bezel graduated for 5 minutes. Most notably it was fitted with the well-known Angelus 8-day movement which already found use in a small number of reference 6152 (see lot 324). Earlier examples of GPF 2/56 were equipped with the "Radiomir" dial, later models had the "Luminor" version.

Regrettably, no documentation survived in regards to the precise number of "Egiziani" produced. Scholarship however stipulates that no more than 50 watches were supplied to the Egyptian Forces and that few other examples were made as prototypes."

...Panerai Super-Coolness...

Sylvester Stallone
Rockin' Pre-Vendome Panerai Luminor Marina
44mm Reference 5218-203/A PVD Coated Titanium

Sylvester Stallone is more responsible for the success of modern Panerai than anybody else on earth. It all began in 1995, when he was filming a movie named Daylight in Italy, and he happened to wander into the Panerai boutique in Florence, Italy, and fell in love with modern Panerai. It is arguable that Sylvester Stallone is the living embodiment of Panerai. He is strong, confident, handsome, clean-cut, masculine, macho, sophisticated, Italian, precise, outstanding, timeless and has always been cool. In other words, if Panerai was a man, it would by Sly, and visa versa.

In the future, I plan to write a much more detailed article on Sly and his impact on the ultra-succesful rebirth of Panerai. In this first photo we see Sly with Angie Everhart in the mid 1990s, probably around 1996, which was close to 20 years ago!!! It is interesting to note that when Sylvester Stallone first began wearing Panerai, he always wore them on his right wrist, but after a few years he switched to his left wrist, where they have remained.

In this next image below, we see Sylvester Stallone around 1996 with his current wife, Jennifer Flavin who he met in 1988. Jennifer Flavin is wearing a Yellow-Gold Rolex Lady Date.

The photo below shows the same Pre-Vendome Luminor Panerai Marina Reference 5128-203 A, which was the very first Panerai to be offered with a PVD coating, which also had a titanium case.

Pictured below, we see the original 1993 Brochure for the Panerai Luminor Marina PVD Reference: 5218-203/A model that Sylvester Stallone is wearing in the photos above.

PANERAI Pocket Watch
59MM Tourbillon GMT Ceramica
Unique Edition of 50 Units
PAM00446

Panerai recently introduced this magnificent masterpiece at SSIH in Switzerland. All Panerai watches were evolved from a 1935 Rolex Oyster pocket watch which was modified by soldering lugs onto the cushion case. 8 decades later, Panerai has gone back-to-the-future by creating this stunningly beautiful ceramic Tourbillon GMT pocket watch, which is destined to be a superb collectors item.

As you can see in the photo below, the skeleton hand-wound mechanical movement is intensely complicated and sophisticated. It features a Panerai 2005/S Calibre movement, which is entirely executed in-house by Panerai. The 31 Jewel movement features a Glucydur balance with beats at 28,800 beats per hour. The Tourbillon movement indicates hours, minutes, small seconds, as well as a second time zone. It also features a 6 day power reserve with three barrels.

Luminor Panerai PAM 372
Discovering A Timeless Classic That Brings Us Back To The Future
47MM 3 Day Movement: Reference PAM00372

I am working on a super-detailed review of the Historic Luminor 1950 3 Days Panerai PAM00372, and I though I would give you a detailed preview. The "Panerai 372" (as it is commonly referred to) is probably the most anticipated modern Panerai ever offered. Panerai first showcased the PAM 372 in 2011 at the SSIH show in Geneva, Switzerland to critical acclaim.

The Panerai PAM 372 is an amazingly cool and desirable watch for many reasons. First and foremost, because it arguably captures the core-essence DNA of the vintage Panerai Reference 6152 from 1954. Many of the details on this watch are very, very similar to the original 6152, which is arguably the quintessential trademark Panerai. The 372 has a sandwich dial with tan lume, which give the watch a very vintage/antique 1940s look–which is incredible!

Before we look more closely at the Panerai 372, let's see what it looks like on a real person. The Panerai 372, just like the Panerai 6152 from the 1950s is 47MM in diameter (excluding the crown guard).

Let's get one thing out of the way. 47MM is an acquired taste. Most people don't go straight to 47MM. They typically begin with a 44MM Panerai, and work their way up to 47MM. Think of 44MM as a gateway to 47MM.

All the wrist shot photos in this article show the Panerai 372 on my wrist which measures 6.5 (165MM) inches in circumference. I am 6 feet tall, but have smaller wrists, yet the Panerai 372 in not too large, and fits unbelievably well. For most people 47MM works well, once you get used to it. I even have one male friend that is 5'2, and another who is 5'3, and they both wear 47MM Panerai 372s that look great on them.

The Panerai Reference 372 is considered a "Base" Panerai, meaning it only has a second and minute hand, which gives is a stunningly simple, streamlined, balanced, highly symmetrical look.

Despite its outstanding looks, the Panerai 372 has zero bling. It is almost reverse bling, which makes it extremely tasteful, clean and sophisticated–in an distinguishing, old-world, kind of way.

The Panerai 372 is a very masculine, macho watch that exudes confidence. Its DNA is that of a real Tool Watch and it has a big, bold look, which remains low-key, unassuming, charismatic and quietly confident.

There is something really unsusual about the vibe and color combination of the Panerai 372 that is amazing! As I mentioned the 372 has a very 1940s, Indiana Jones, Safari-lifestyle kind of look. If you have ever seen the movie The English Patient, it used an unusual, kind of antique art-deco, 1930-1940s color pallet, and the 372 has that exact same vibe. Every time I look at the 372, either the National Geographic Explorer theme song, or the Raiders Of The Lost Ark, or James Bond theme-song starts playing in my head! Seriously!!!

Speaking of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, in the photo below, I was wearing the PAM 372 with khaki cargo pants and brown boots, and I took this shot, that kind of looks like Indiana Jones, from Raiders Of The Lost Ark–which happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time.

The Panerai PAM 372 is so cool looking in a Steve McQueen kind of way. In other words, it oozes super-cool energy and charisma. The photo below shot in front of the Golden Gate Bridge shows the front and side view of the split cushion case, and you can't help but notice the plexiglass crystal. Panerai chose to use plexiglass instead of synthetic sapphire crystal, because they wanted to make the 372 look as authentic and vintage as possible.

The PAM 372 comes standard with a straight 26/26/4MM Ranger Strap which has a stunningly beautiful aged tobacco color, that looks like a rich cigar leaf and develops and even better patina over time. "26/26/4MM" means the strap is 26MM between the lugs, and does not taper, so it ends at 26MM. The 4MM indicates the thickness of the strap. The original Panerai 6152 from 1954 came with 26/26/4mm leather straps, which offer a real tool watch look and vibe. The Panerai 372 comes standard with a removable, brushed/satin finished Pre-V buckle which is curved, and gives the strap a beautifully streamlined, cohesive, fitted look.

The Panerai 372 is pictured above, in front of another stunningly timeless Art Deco masterpiece–the Golden Gate Bridge–which has also endured and successfully transcended time. The Panerai 372 design language is pure Art-deco, going into late 1950s Populux, and it has a definite 1950s, old-world sensibility to it. It is super-cool looking, in a James Dean, 1955, clean-cut kind of way. In my minds eye, I can see James Dean, driving his 1955 Porsche 356 Super Speedster, wearing this beautiful watch!!!

The dial is matte black with a very fine micro-bead blasted look to it, and in brighter light it looks almost like it's a very, very dark brown. Also, the Panerai 372 has a very distinct, unique, trademark look that will NEVER be confused with any other watch brand on earth.

The build quality of every aspect of the Panerai 372 is superb. Every single detail is flawlessly executed, and the more time I spend studying the detail, the more I realize how much love and passion has gone into the design of this watch.

The Luminor Panerai dial designation is etched into the uncluttered dial, and the sandwich dial offers deep 3-dimensionality. Did I mention I am madly in love with the Panerai 372!?! It is such an Italian beauty, like Sophia Loren, with gorgeous curves everywhere, I can't take my eyes off it, and I can't seem to stop staring at it!!! The watch has a mystical, magical quality about it, and it looks great from every angle.

I have said it before, there is something unique about super-high-end Italian design that is arguably unquantifiable, but it exists. Think Ferrari, or Pavarotti singing, and the Panerai 372 exudes this superlative "rare-air" Italian quality. The entire color palette of the 372, with from its tan lume to its tobacco colored strap is rich Italianate–mocha earth-tones, and dessert browns that exude warmth and antiquity. Also, I noticed the 372 looks great with absolutely everything I have worn with it. The watch looks sporty, and elegant at the same time, in a timeless-modern kind of way.

Every single detail on the Panerai 372 is optimized for a streamlined, highly comfortable fit. This is due to many design variables, including the fact it has a completely flat back so it sits perfectly on your wrist, and fits like a glove. It is completely counter-intuitive, but the Panerai 372 is the most comfortable, best fitting watch I have ever worn. Also because of the design of the case and the strap, when temperature fluctuations occur, the watch does not become lose and does not move around on your wrist.

There is something else really unusual about the Panerai PAM372, at least for me. I don't like anything that looks old-looking, distressed or rough-hewn. In other words, I have always liked everything I own to look new. Take blue jeans for instance. I only like dark denim, and I can't stand really faded jeans. You get the idea. The PAM372 is an exception to the rule, because the older and more worn it gets, the more vintage looking it gets. In other words, you almost want to try to scratch up the plexiglass crystal, because it makes it look better.

Panerai is renowned for making limited edition watches, meaning they only make 500 or 1000 pieces of a model, which because they are so desirable, have a very strong effect on the appreciation of the watch. Thank God, Panerai did not make the 372 a limited edition watch!!! This means anybody who wants a 372, can purchase one, at least eventually. If I understand it correctly, the 372 is not a limited edition watch, but a limited production model, meaning Panerai is only making something like 2000 units per year for the international marketplace.

The Panerai 372 is a manual wind watch which surprisingly did not take much getting used to. I never thought I would prefer a manual wind watch over an automatic, but there is something really kind of cool and interesting about winding it every day. You can tell the watch is completely wound when you can't wind it any more.

The 372 has and EXTREMELY precise Panerai P.3000 calibre movement that keeps virtually perfect time, and when I say PERFECT, I mean PERFECT. In 30 days it did not gain or loose a minute!!! This is due to the in-house double double barrel Panerai 3-Day movement. The movement also has a feature which allows you to easily move the hour hand independently of the minute hand, so changing time zones or changing time for day light savings time is instant. It is worth noting, the Panerai 372 P.3000 movement has a 3 day (72hour) power reserve, which is remarkable for a manual wind watch.

Some people say they like watches with a constantly moving second hand attached to the center stem because it makes it look like the watch is alive. I am the opposite. I think the constantly moving second hand makes the watch look like it has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The lack of a second hand gives the Panerai 372 a Zen-like, peaceful, quiet calming effect. Also the lack of a date is a feature for me. Nothing drives me more crazy than having to change the date or having the wrong date on my watch. Also, the lack of a date, gives the 372 a perfectly balanced, symmetrical look, which I really like.

The photo below shows the lume pattern, which is insanely cool looking, and really kind of represents the core essence of the original vintage Panerai tool watches!!!

Conclusion

As I mentioned at the beginning of this preview, I plan to go much more into depth with this article, and as time permits I will be updateing it with more photos, observations and anecdotes.

So what do I think about the Panerai PAM 372? I think it is the coolest watch I have ever worn in my life!!! Officine Paneari has hit an absolutely brilliant Grand-Slam with the 372!!! As I mentioned earlier in the article, I am madly in love with the stunningly simple PAM 372!!! If I had to get stuck on a dessert island for the rest of my life, and I could only have one watch, I would chose the Panerai PAM00372!!! It's really that simple (Pun Intended ;-)

I also think the Panerai 372 is the most timeless watch every made. Why? Because its design is from 1954 and it still looks great and equally modern! I can think of a few other watches made by Patek Philippe and Rolex from the 1950s, that are stunningly beautiful, but they are way too small to wear today at 34mm. As people get bigger and taller, larger watches make much more sense, and at 47MM the Luminor Panerai 00372 remains perfectly ahead of its time.

Luminor Panerai Equation Of Time
A Tribute To Galileo Galilei
Special Limited Edition of 30 Pieces
50MM Reference PAM00365

All the vintage Panerai watches had cases, crowns and movements made by Rolex. When the modern Panerai company was resurrected in the early 1990s, before Richmont took over, the movements they used were rudimentary. Over the past few decades Panerai has invested heavily in developing their movement manufacturing prowess, and one could argue this has resulted in the Panerai's Equation Of Time Tourbillon Tatanio, which was introduced in 2010.

This stunning work of horological art is one of the most complicated wrist watches ever made, but you would not necessarily notice this fact from looking at it from the front.  The PAM00365 features a 50MM Titanium case, with a hand-wound mechanical, Panerai P.2005/G calibre, made exclusively in-house by Panerai. It has a Tourbillon, coupled with a 3 barrel movement coupled with a KIF Parechoc anti-shock device, that features a 4 day power reserve.

The watch has many complications beyond and hour and minute hand, which include a small seconds hand, date, month indicator, sunrise and sunset indicators, equation of time indicator, and a power reserve indicator. The PAM00365 is customizable to the place you live in order for the sunrise and sunset indicator to function accurately.

The caseback of the watch features a sapphire crystal that showcases the tourbillon regulator as well as a map of the sky that rotates in one the direction of the hemisphere the watch is located in.  In the future I hope to do a detailed review of this stunning masterpiece which showcases Panerai's technological prowess.

The PAM00365 is a tribute to the great Italian scientist, Galileo Galilei, who's portrait we see below, which was painted by Justus Sustermans in
1636.

Stallone & Schwarzenegger

A Story Of Friendship & Panerai

The two most influential actors in Hollywood who originally helped to popularize Panerai are Hollywood acting legends Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. How did this happen? In the future I plan to expand on this story in detail, but I though I would get it going now.

The first five photos below were taken at the opening party for Planet Hollywood in Berlin on September 24, 1996. These photos show Sylvester Stallone giving his good pal, Arnold Schwarzenegger a Sly Tech Panerai.

It is important to note that when Sly started wearing Panerai watches, he would always wear them on his right wrist.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is pictured above and below showing off his Panerai which Sly gave to him that evening as a gift, and he appears to be very proud of his gift.

This fourth image shows Arnold Schwarzenegger trying on his Panerai Sly Tech model (Pre-Vendome Luminor Panerai Daylight Reference 5218-203A) that Sylvester Stallone gave him as a gift. Arnold Schwarzenegger still wears his Sly Tech Panerai to this day.

This next image shows Sylvester Stallone with Gerard Depardieu and Arnold Schwarzenegger at Planet Hollywood in Berlin. Sylvester Stallone is wearing his white dial Luminor Daylight Sly Tech Panerai, and Schwarzenegger is holding his Pre-V Gift Box.

Sylvester Stallone wore a Pre-Vendome Panerai in his movie named Daylight which debuted December 6, 1996. The two photos below were taken on the set of Daylight.

We See Arnold Schwarzenegger sporting his Pre-Vendome Panerai Reference 5218-203A in the two pictures below.

The screen grab below shows Arnold Schwarzenegger wearing his Pre-V Panerai in the 1996 Movie named Eraser, and we see him talking to his co-star, Vanessa Williams.

The 44MM Luminor Marina Panerai screen grab pictured below is from the opening scene of Arnold Schwarzennegger's 1996 movie named Eraser, which I remember seeing back in 1996 in a movie theater. I think this was the first time I ever saw a Panerai watch. I think this is likely the first close-up of a Panerai in movie history, and for the record, the Panerai is in Arnold's characters hands.

Above image is from the opening scene in the 1996 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, named Eraser

One of the obvious questions, is whether or not this was product placement, or was Schwarzenegger using the Panerai to make a high-tec/cool statement about his special agent character? Either way, I say it is really cool.

In the photo below we see see Sylvester Stallone attending a special Panerai event on October 3, 2002 to launch the new Panerai 1950 "Fiddy" 47MM PAM00127, and he is standing next to Phillipe Bonay, who, at the time was the President of Panerai.

Sylvester Stallone is sporting a PAM127 in the photo below and when he spoke at the event he mentioned that when he first encountered Panerai watches in Florence, Italy in the first Panerai boutique, he knew they possessed a star quality, and he went on to mention how impressed he was with Panerai's enduring success.

It is interesting to note in the photo above, we see Sylvester Stallone wearing his Panerai for the first time on his left wrist. For some reason, as witnessed in all the prior photos, he always wore it on his right wrist?

Panerai Launches iPad & iPhone App

Panerai just introduced a free Panerai Application for the iPad and iPhone which is really cool. The image below is what the iPad App looks like when you first launch it.

If you click on the MENU button in the bottom left hand corner, a menu with the following options pop up.

The Panerai Application has a great history overview that walks you through a timeline of Panerai achievements.

The Application has a catalog that has all the current Panerai watches, and you can click on them for detail.

The detailed view in the Panerai iPad Application even has a Night View slider so you can see what the lume will look like at in the dark!!!

The Panerai App also has a function that allows you to take a photo of your naked wrist and then see what different models would look like on your wrist (not shown). This helps to give you an idea of what different Panerai watches would look like on your wrist.

Overall, the Panerai iPad/iPhone Application is very cool and offers a fun experience that is educational and interesting.

Drew Brees
SuperBowl Winning NFL Quarterback
New Orleans Saints

With Panerai Keeping The Time Of His Life

Drew Brees is a legendary NFL football player who holds multiple NFL passing records including being the fastest to reach 40,000 yards passing, as well as being the all-time single season passing leader with 5,476 yards. He also holds the NFL record for most consecutive games with a passing touchdown at 54.

Drew Brees led his New Orleans Saints to win Super Bowl XLIV in 2010 against the AFC champion Indianapolis Colts. This represented the very first time the New Orleans Saint ever played in the Super Bowl.

Drew Brees is a big fan of Officine Panerai watches and owns and wears many different models as seen in the following photos. This first photo shows Drew holding his son, Baylen Brees at a New York Yankees game the New York Mets on June 20, 2010 at Yankees Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City.
