Two Panerai Legends
Finally Meet After 15 Year Freindship

Two of the worlds Panerai's greatest experts met in person for the first time on October 4th in Singapore, right before a huge Singaporean GTG. This first photo appears courtesey of Revolution Magazine, and it features Angelo Bonati, CEO of Panerai, pictured on the left, with leading Panerai Collector, Alan Bloore, best known by his online handle of HAMMER. Angelo Bonati and HAMMER have corresponded over the internet for the last decade and a half, and they just met in person for the first time.

Note: If you look closely, you can see that Mr. Bonati and HAMMER are both wearing Historic Radiomir Panerai 1940 cases. It appears Mr. Bonati is wearing the PAM 514 and HAMMER is wearing a PAM 532. It appears that Panerai is really focusing energy on models with the 1940 Historic case, which is awesome in my opinion. Why? The 1940 Historic case is based on the vintage Panerai Radiomir Reference 6154, which has the most beautiful watch case/body ever made.

Yeu Huan took this next photo of HAMMER and Mr. Bonati  discussing a Panerai watch. HAMMER is a complete, dyed-in-the-wool, knock-down, drag-out Panerai FANATIC of the highest order. He has one of the most amazing vintage and Panerai watch collections on earth, and owns what is likely the most beautiful vintage Panerai watch ever made, which is a Reference 6154, Small Egiziano

HAMMER's heartwarming Panerai story is like no other. He was originally a big Rolex collector, and still is, but when he discovered vintage Panerai watches, he fell madly in love with the brand, and was mesmerized by their timeless masculine design and stunning beauty.

HAMMER was in a serious Jet Skiing accident in 2006, which caused him to be paralyzed from the chest down. HAMMER said that Panerai saved his life, and gave him a reason to live after he had almost given up on life after his terrible accident. He said his great fellow Paneristi pals gave him so much love and caring that they inspired him to want to live and heal, and be the best he could be. The image above appears courtesy of Revolution Magazine, and they have a great article with more detail and photos on their website.

Angelo Bonati, on behalf of the entire Panerai community gave his pal HAMMER a gift of a very special Panerai "0000" prototype, of the all new PAM00532, which features the "PANERISTI FOREVER" designation on the back.

Volker Wiegmann is great pals with Hammer, and he was on hand to take the amazing shot below that compares HAMMER's new PAM 532 with an HAMMER's vintage Reference 6154, and it is remarkable how great and similar side-by-side.

Volker Wiegmann is from Austria and Hammer is from Australia, and they are pictured below, and as I mentioned, they are great pals. Volker is another absolute Panerai fanatic and leading world expert on Vintage Panerai. Volker and his research partner, Ralf Ehlers have written several amazing vintage Panerai books, which you can find at www.VintagePanerai.com.

San Francisco Shreeve & Company Annual Panerai GTG Party

San Francisco
Shreeve & Company
Annual Panerai GTG Party

Shreeve & Company is the oldest Jewelry story in San Francisco, and I recently attended their Annual Panerai celebration party which was thrown at Epic Road House, which is located on the San Francisco Embarcadero. The Epic Road House is one of the most beautiful restaurants in San Francisco, and its views of the San Francisco Bay Bridge are breathtaking.

Panerai President, Rafael Alvarez attended the event and he is pictured above on the far left. Next we see a Alex Alesandrini from Shreeve & Company in San Francisco, next we see leading San Francisco dentist, Tom Jow, and pictured on the far right we see Panerai executive Karl Poulson.

Tom owns an beautiful Limited Edition Panerai PAM00249 from 2006, which was the first limited edition Historic 47MM Panerai model made with an Art Deco California dial, and I asked him if I could check it out. I mentioned I believed the PAM00249, and PAM00372 are not only my two favorite Panerai watches, but how, collectively they represent the best of Historic Panerai DNA. In the photo below we see Tom taking a photo of my PAM 372, next to his PAM 249 with his iPhone 5.

I took this next photo of my PAM 372 next to Tom's PAM 249. I tried on Tom's PAM 249, and I was surprised at how much smaller it seemed than my PAM 372. This is due to the fact the PAM 372 has standard lugs, and the PAM 249 has wire lugs.

Tom held up the my PAM 372 and his PAM 249 so we could take front view profile shots, and you see the PAM 249 has a beautifully rounded domed crystal.

Panerai setup these beautiful display cases at the event, which showcased a wide variety of amazing Panerai watches. As I mentioned earlier, the Epic Road House Restraunt has a STUNNING view of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, out the window as seen below.

I had a chance to check out the new Panerai PAM 514, and in the photo below, we see it on my wrist being compared to my PAM372. I was surprised how much smaller the PAM 514 seemed next to the PAM 372. I believe this is because the PAM 372 is based upon the vintage Panerai 6152 and the PAM 514 is based upon the vintage Panerai Reference 6154. Of course, the PAM 372 also has the crown protector, which gives it a bigger look, and it also has a raised Plexiglass crystal, whereas the PAM 514 has a lower profile sapphire crystal.

The Panerai PAM 514 (pictured below) also has a tapered 26 to 22 strap, which gives it a smaller, more dressy look.

There was a man who attended the event who was wearing a Special Edition Panerai PAM 341 from 2009, which I had never seen before in person, and I was shocked at how enormous this monster was in person. I knew it was 60MM, but I was stunned at how much larger is looked next to my PAM 372. Actually it makes my PAM 372 look small!?!?!

I ran into Swedish beauty, Lisa Kalbfleisch who is a Shreeve & Company sales associate at their Palo Alto store, and I noticed she was wearing the new 42MM Panerai PAM00512, which features the Historic 1940s Radiomir case.

The Panerai PAM 512, is a specific example of Panerai design brilliance. By making this model at 42MM it fits beautifully on women, even on petite women.

In this next photo, we see the new limited edition Panerai PAM00507, which is made out of Brass. Part of the beauty of this watch is that since it is made out of Brass, instead of Gold, it is much more toned down, kind of like the new light gold iPhone 5.

I took this next photo from the rear deck of the Epic Road House, and the view was absolutely stunning!

Overall the Panerai GTG was really fun and a beautiful party, with beautiful watches, and people in a beautiful venue. As I was walking away from the Epic Road House, I snapped this last image.

Chris Botti is an American born musical, of Italian descent and he is probably the greatest trumpet player alive today. The only other person I would consider to be in his class is the incomparable Wynton Marsalis. Chris Botti is a Grammy Award winning artist best know for his cool, chill smooth jazz trumpet style. BTW, If you are interested in learning more about the history of the jazz trumpet, you can check out the super detailed article I recently published on Jake's Rolex World, about another Iconic Jazz Legend, and Trumpet Virtuoso, Dizzy Gillespie.

The Panerai PAM00210 was introduced by Officine Panerai in 2005 and they offered 15 units which comprised the H-Series. The PAM 201 originally shipped on a black calfskin leather strap, and we one pictured below on a tobacco colored strap. The Panerai PAM 210 is a "Base" Panerai which means it only has the basic hour and minute hands, which makes it a really simple and elegant design.

If you are not familiar with Chris Botti, or even if you are, you are in for a real treat. Below, I have posted two amazing full length Chris Botti Concerts!!! The first concert below is one of the greatest concerts I have ever watched in my life, and it features singing his haunting rendition of "What are you doing the rest of your life." Enjoy!!!

Pierce Brosnan
An Amazing Career With Panerai Keep The Time Of His Life

Pierce Bronsnan's career achievements are awe inspiring, and he is certainly one of the coolest guys to ever wear a Panerai watch, as well as at leastone of two actors who have played James Bond, that wear Panerai, the other being Sir Sean Connery. In the photo below, we see Pierce wearing on of his trademark Panerai Luminor watches.

After The Sunset

Luminor Marina Panerai 44mm
Reference PAM 00091

Pierce Brosnan is one of the great action/adventure actors of his generation. Brosnan not only starred as James Bond for several movies, but has been in some other great movies, including The Thomas Crown Affair, as well as After The Sunset. In After The Sunset, Pierce wore a Stainless Steel Luminor [Reference PAM 00091] as seen below. The PAM 00091 could easily be mistaken for the later PAM00297, and they are similar, but not the same reference.

After The Sunset  is an action/adventure/comedy move which debuted in 2004, and had an all-star cast including; Pierce Brosnan, Salma Kayek, Woody Harrelson and Don Cheadle. On could argue that the After The Sunset plot was based loosely on Cary Grant's original To Catch A Thief movie.

The photo below shows the Panerai Luminor Marina Reference PAM00091 model that Pierce Brosnan wore in After The Sunset.

The photo below shows Pierce Brosnan just hanging out in real life, wearing his Panrerai, which he wore in After The Sunset.

Ultra-Rare 4-Line Vintage
Marina Militare Luminor Panerai Models

These vintage Luminor Panerai watches are ultra-rare as they have the 4-line Dial designation that says "Marina Militare, Luminor Panerai" and they have the subsidiary second hand. These watches were the first experimental Panerai watches made without Rolex movements, and instead used Angelus movements. That is one of the most interesting things about vintage Panerai watches, is how much variance there is in design, which demonstrates, that Panerai, like Rolex used to experiment like crazy with different in order to innovate.

...Panerai Model Introduction...

Panerai Luminor Lefty
SIHH Preview
47MM Reference 00577

I first heard the rumors months ago that Panerai would be introducing a left-handed version of the ultra-successful Reference 00372, which I wear, and it turn out they were true!

Staying true to their heritage, Panerai had the wisdom to come out with a left-handed version of "The Panerai." This is great news for left-handed Panerai fans, and it is just another detail that sets Panerai apart from other brands.

Below is the contents of the Official Panerai press release which discusses the detail in this new model:

LUMINOR 1950 LEFT-HANDED 3 DAYS – 47mm

There are some watches which on their first appearance come across as true icons of a brand, from their ability to communicate their identity and history through their design. One of these is the Luminor 1950 3 Days – 47mm, the clean lines of which have an immediate appeal for enthusiasts looking for a model in the simplicity of which all the vintage fascination of Panerai watches can be found. The Luminor 1950 3 Days is now also available in a version enhanced by another historic detail: Officine Panerai presents the left-handed version, in which the winding crown and the crown-protecting device are at 9 o’clock, on the left side of the case.

Left-handed watches are very much part of the history of Panerai. The commandos of the Italian Navy had to wear several instruments on their wrists at once: not only the watch, indispensable for synchronising their attacks and for keeping track of the length of time spent in the depths of the sea, but also the compass and depth gauge. For convenience, some of them preferred to wear the watch on the right wrist, and for them Panerai created the watch with the winding crown on the left side, as can be seen in some rare contemporary examples which still survive today.

The steel case of the Luminor 1950 Left-Handed 3 Days has a unique detail which distinguishes it from the classic Luminor 1950 case: the caseband has a cusped shape, hinting at the form of a cushion case. This little detail, picked up directly from some examples of the period, tells the story which brought about the transformation from the Radiomir, created in 1936, with a classic cushion case, to the Luminor, more massive in its proportions and identified by the device protecting the winding crown.

Another element of great interest is the absolute purity of the black dial, with the large numerals at the cardinal points, on which the words “Luminor Panerai” are engraved in the lettering of the time. The clarity and legibility of the dial are enhanced by its sandwich structure, being formed of two superimposed plates enclosing a layer of Super-LumiNova® which guarantees a high degree of luminosity. The dial is protected not by a sapphire crystal but by a Plexiglas® one, similar to the polymethyl methacrylate used in the historic models.

The movement of the Luminor 1950 Left-Handed 3 Days is the hand-wound P.3000 calibre with a power reserve of three days, completely developed and made in the Officine Panerai manufacture at Neuchâtel. With a diameter of 161⁄2 lignes, the calibre has a distinctive structure with wide bridges, two spring barrels which provide the power reserve of three days and a balance wheel 13.2 mm in diameter. The P.3000 calibre also has the rapid time-changing device, by means of which the hour hand is moved in jumps of one hour at a time, without interfering with the minute hand or the running of the watch.

The Luminor 1950 Left-Handed 3 Days (PAM00557) is water-resistant to a depth of 100 metres (10 atmospheres). It is fitted with strap of natural, untreated leather, fastened by a brushed steel buckle inspired by that of the period model. It is supplied with a second strap made of rubber and a spare Plexiglas® crystal.

Movement: Hand-wound mechanical, Panerai P.3000 calibre, executed entirely by Panerai, 161⁄2 lignes, 5.3 mm thick, 21 jewels, Glucydur® balance, 21,600 alternations/hour. Incabloc® anti-shock device. Power reserve 3 days, two barrels. 160 components.

Functions: Hours, minutes.

Case: Diameter 47 mm, AISI 316L polished steel.

Bezel: Polished steel.

Back: See-through sapphire crystal.

Device protecting the crown: (protected as a trademark) Brushed steel.

Dial: Black with luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers.

Crystal: Plexiglas®, 3 mm thick.

Water-resistance: 10 bar (~ 100 metres).

Strap: PANERAI personalised leather strap and large-size brushed steel buckle. Supplied with a second interchangeable strap, second Plexiglas® and a steel screwdriver.

Reference: PAM00557.

Michael Strahan
Co-Host of Live with Kelly & Michael
47MM Historic Luminor Panerai PAM00423

Michael Strahan is a legendary SuperBowl Champion & Fox NFL Sunday Co-Host as well as being the co-host of Emmy Award Winning morning show named Live with Kelly & Michael which airs mornings on ABC.  Michael Strahan is pictured below on yesterdays episode of Live with Kelly and Michael wearing a 47MM Historic Luminor Panerai PAM00423, which is a great looking watch.

Michael Strahan replaced Regis Philbin when Regis retired from Regis and Kelly, so the new show is co-hosted by Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. Yesterday on the show Kelly and Michael were interviewing Jonah Hill about his upcoming role in the Martin Scorsese movie named, "The Wolf Of Wall Street" in which he costars with Leonardo DiCaprio, and it looks like a really good movie. The Wolf Of Wall Street launches in movie theaters on December 25, 2013, and in the first trailer below you see Jonah Hill in the opening scene which is really funny:

xxxxx

I just happened to watch a few minutes of Live with Kelly & Michael for the first time yesterday, and noticed Michael's Panerai. The show is really interesting and fun, and Michael is extremely charming, intelligent and charismatic, and of course, he has superb taste in watches ;-)

Panerai watches are really popular with NFL players, particularly because they look great, are macho and sporty, and are also larger, so they scale well with bigger men like Michael who is 6 foot 5.

In the pictured above you can see Michael Strahan sporting his 47MM Luminor Panerarai PAM00423, which is pictured below. The PAM00423 is extremely similar to the Luminor Panerai PAM00372, but it ads a second hand at 9 o'clock and well as a 72 hour power reserve indicator on the dial.

Michael Strahan played 15 years in the NFL, and he was a seven time Pro-Bowler, as well as being only one of four NFL players to lead in sacks for two seasons.
