Luminor Marina Panerai on the Beach
PAM00111 44MM

Just another day at the beach for this Paneristi.  What could be more romantic than watching the sun set with the one you adore–The PAM111!!!! This Luminor Marina keeps this gal's wrist nice and warm with its larger 44MM case.  The PAM111 will help you count down the seconds with the subdial at 9 o'clock, as the sun drops slowly behind the calming ocean.

Just incase you would like a better look at her face (PAM111), I included a shot of the gorgeous Luminor Marina. This is a hot watch for Panerai and seems to be the gateway watch for many.

Ultra Rare Panerai Prototype
Reference 6152/1

The photos below show one of the rarest Luminor Panerai watches ever made. This is a standard vintage Luminor Panerai Reference 6152/1 made in 1952, which was made with a unique prototype dial. The dial has complete second markers that run around the entire dial. Of course, the detail that makes this watch look so unusual, are all of the small circular second marker, which have never appeared on a base Panerai dial. In other words, just to be crystal clear, this vintage model typically had an identical dial, without the small round minute markers between the 12, 3, 6, 9, and baton 5 minute baton markers.

This first photo was taken by Luciano Cuppilo, and it appears in his amazing Panerai book.

To the best of my knowledge this is a unique piece, which is still owned today by the Panerai family. It never ceases to amaze me, how much Panerai experimented with design, and it is equally amazing how many ultra-rare examples of vintage Panerai watches have been documented. I believe this is something Panerai and Rolex have in common, is that they both experimented like crazy, and often times the watches that never made it into production are even more fascinating than the ones that were produced.

The photo below shows the lume pattern of this unique Luminor Panerai that was made in the early 1950s, and as we see, its Lume is still glowing strong!

...Panerai Super-Coolness...

It Finally Happened!!!
Panerai Launches Marina Militare Acciaio
PAM00587 47MM Unique Edition of 1000 Units

It is hard to believe, but after all these years of waiting, Panerai finally brought the watch to life which was known as the "Small Egiziano" which was know in vintage Panerai parlance by its reference number of Reference 6154. The only challenge with this watch is that Panerai is only making 1000 units. Panerai has named this model the PAM00587, and you can learn more about it on Panerai.com.

This Italian beauty has all the vintage characteristics including a plexiglass crystal, and from what I can tell it appears to basically be a PAM00372 without the trademark Panerai half-crescent crown guard, and with a Marina Militare dial designation instead of a Luminor Panerai. It also features sharper pencil hands, which differ from the PAM 372 hands.

This watch design is highly authentic, and if you look at the photo of me on the right side of this page, and click on it to see it better, I am actually wearing the exact vintage Panerai this watch is based upon, which is a Rolex made Reference 6152/1 with the Marina Militare dial designation.

Panerai's choice of the dark chocolate natural strap was superb. This gives the watch a serious vintage vibe that plays beautifully off the base dial.

To a large extent, the beauty of this model, as witnessed in the photo below, which gives us a slightly off-angle front view, is that it really shows off the beautiful symmetry and balance of the cushion case. This watch is such a Winner!!! The more I look at it, the more in awe I become!!! THIS is the real Panerai DNA that give Panerai is pure magic...

Design Analysis

Inevitably Paneristi will compare the new limited edition PAM00587 with the existing standard edition Panerai PAM00372. From what I can tell from analyzing the photos, they are basically the exact same watch, with the difference of the crown-gaurd v. the big 8mm crown. As I mentioned earlier, the hands on the PAM 587 are different, and a not only arguably more authentic but better in design. Specifically, some people have argued that the hands on the PAM 372 are too short, especially compared to the hands on the vintage Panerai Reference 6152 it is based upon. The the hands on the 587, are not only longer, but also sharper looking, which synergies perfectly with the late Art-Deco Populuxe design style of the dial and case, which reeks of 1950s masculine style.

The 587 also looks sharper, cleaner, longer and leaner, simpler, more streamlined, and less chunky than its sibling 387. In my opinion, the PAM 587 is a pure and absolute Minimalist Masterpiece, and it looks less affected, contrived, and obvious than the 372. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the 372, and wear one, but the 587 is an example of less, really being more. The 372 is more Sylvester Stallone/Rambo, and the 587 is more Cary Grant/James Bond.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."
–Leonardo da Vinci

So what does this mean? As much as I love my PAM00372, I still am crazy about the PAM00587!!! It is so weird how similar they are, but how different they are at the same time!!! There is kind of a Yin/Yang balance between the two vintage Panerai styles, that is almost kind of Zen-like, to mix metaphors ;-)

The suggested retail price for the 587 is $10,100.

In order to properly contextualize the significance of the advent of this new model, I decided to add some previously published material that originally appeared on Jake's Panerai World in a little over a year ago in August, 2013. This next story covers the model the Panerai PAM00587 is based upon. At the end of the story I will add another side by side comparison.

"History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme."

–Mark Twain

Let's begin with a side by side comparison of the original vintage Panerai next to the new model. On the left we have the Reference 6152/1 next to the modern PAM00587:

In my personal opinion, Panerai has done an excellent job with the design of this beautiful vintage inspired new limited edition model!!!

Anatomy Of A Vintage Panerai

MARINA MILITARE
Reference 6152/1 Made in the 1940s
17 Jewel Rolex Movement with 8MM Rolex Brevet Crown

Today we are going to closely examine a stunningly beautiful vintage Panerai that was made in the late 1940s for the Italian Royal Navy. This watch has the Italian Royal Navy designation on the Dial which reads: "MARINA MILITARE." In case you are not familiar with the vintage Panerai watches with the "MARINA MILITARE" designation on the dial, they were made for the Italian Royal Navy, and lack any kind of "Panerai" designation on the entire watch. In other words, this watch is 100% pure Panerai, it just does not say so on the watch.

All the photos in this article were taken by Matthew Bain, and they showcase a very, very rare vintage Panerai model which has a "MM" engraving on the back, with a military issue number.

It appears that all the parts on this watch are original. Notice the hands have an interesting patina where they have oxidized over time and the hour hand almost has a sunburst pattern on it. This watch has the serial number 124XXX engraved between the top lugs, and the 6152 1 Reference number engraved between the lower lugs.

The photos below show this beauty from both side views of the case. The first image below shows the 8MM Rolex BREVET winding crown. Keep in mind that Rolex made this watch  for Panerai, which explains why the winding crown has the Rolex five-finger hand winding crown.

From a design perspective, this watch is outrageously beautiful in its simplicity. The 1940s watch case was super-streamlined in every way, yet very masculine. The case is almost identical to the 6152 which has the "Tight Seal Device", but it has the Rolex Brevet winding crown instead.

In my personal opinion, the only vintage Panerai watch ever made, that is more beautiful that this, is the super-iconic Radiomir Panerai Reference 6154 "Small Egiziano" which was made for the Egyptian Navy. The Panerai 6152/1 and the Panerai 6154 are remarkably similar in case design, but the 6154 is skinnier and even more streamlined that the 6152/1.

The photo below shows the 12 sided case-back which has the original Italian Royal Navy Military Issue Number engraving which reads "S.M.Z" on the first line, and "M.M. 103" on the bottom.

The next image below shows the Panerai 6152/1 with the case-back removed, and it appears to have a movement cover which may have been designed to improve anti-magnetic performance.

In the next photo below, we see the 17 Ruby Mechanical Rolex Movement, which is remarkably simple, sturdy, accurate, and durable.

Pictured below we see the inside of the screw-out case back, which has twelve sides. Notice inside is says "Montres Rolex S.A., Geneva, Switzerland, Patented. Stainless Steel. Swiss Made. 6152 1.
One of the most interesting details that sets every single vintage Panerai apart, is how different the patina is, both on the dial and the hands. The unique patina on everywatch is unique and almost like a fingerprint.  This particular watch lume has not darkened or changed very much. The Arabic numeral markers are still bright white, which give the watch a precise, fresh look. The hands also look really cool.

Panerai Marina Militare
Reference 6152-1: 47mm

If you wonder what I look like, here is a photo of me wearing an original Rolex made Panerai 6152-1 with the Marina Militare dial. This watch was made in the late 1940 or early 1950s an is one of my absolute favorite Panerai watches of all time. As previously mentioned if you look closely it has the Marina Militare dial designation as is the model the new PAM00587 is based upon. So just to be crystal-clear, the watch I am wearing in the photo below is NOT the new PAM00587, but the Original vintage Panerai Reference 6152-1, which the PAM 587 is modeled after.

Hammer (sitting below) and Volker (standing below) are best not only best pals, or should I say, great M8TES (Mates), but they are two of the most iconic personalities in the Paneristi world. Both recently attended P-Day in Italy, and also had the opportunity to take a tour of the brand-new Panerai factory located in Neuchatel, Switzerland.

Volker published a great overview of the time he and Hammer spent together in Italy called, Hammertime in Europe. Volker is one of the worlds leading authorities on all things Vintage Panerai, and co-authored many definitive Panerai history books. You can learn much more about Volker on his excellent VintagePanerai.com website.

You can learn much more about Hammer by checking out this story I wrote about him named Hammer Strength. Hammer is one of the leading, if not the leading vintage Panerai collectors in the world, and he owns what is arguably the most beautiful Panerai in existence, which is the Reference 6154, as seen below on the left, next to his Reference 6152 on the right.

While at the new Panerai factory, Volker took the photo of the all-new Panerai PAM 587 Marina Militare pictured below.

BIX Restraunt in San Francisco

Tonight I attended a Panerai Special GTG Event in San Francisco hosted by Shreeve & Company, and they held the event at the famous San Francisco restaurant named BIX, which is nestled in a hidden alley near downtown San Francisco.

In the photo below, I am pictured (on the right) with the President of Panerai, Rafael Alvarez (pictured on left wearing necktie). Of course, I am rockin' my Luminor Panerai PAM 372 as you can see below.

Panerai fans came from all over the Bay Area to attend the elegant San Francisco GTG, including many of the beautiful saleswomen from Shreeve. If you live in the Bay Area you are probably familiar with Shreeve & Company, which is renowned for their superb jewelry and watches they offer.

In the photo below, we see Panerai President Rafael Alverez discussing a Panerai model with a Panerai customer. Rafael is a veritable walking encyclopedia of all thing Panerai, and he is equally passionate about the brand.

The photo below shows the Oysterbar located on the actual bar at BIX Restaurant. BIX is renowned for offering a very warm and romantic setting, which worked perfectly for the 1940s themed evening.

BIX Restaurant is designed like a 1940s Supper-Club, and upstairs you can see the railcar like booth seats.

I have always liked the painting hanging in BIX that shows a beautiful woman kissing a circus clown. I think the name of this panting my be Kissing A Fool...

Of course the star of the show were all of the wonderful Panerai watches, which, as usual were wonderfully showcased.

All-New Panerai

Radiomir 1940 Marina Militare
47MM PAM00587

At Jake's Panerai World, we were extremely fortunate to get ahold of the first Panerai PAM 587 to reach the United States, so a special thanks to Panerai for making this happen!!!

We are working on a super-detailed review of this amazing new vintage inspired historic Panerai model. We've had the watch since last week, and I have been testing it and studying all the magnificent details. My preliminary opinion is that the PAM 587 is the most historically accurate, best-looking, absolute coolest Panerai ever made by the contemporary Panerai company, and I don't say that lightly...It belongs to both the vintage world and modern world, and as a result is a truly timeless design which remains ahead of its time...

Some Preliminary Observations:

• The tapered 26/22/4 strap took me by surprise. I thought I would not like it, and would want to instantly replace it with a 26/26/4 strap, but that was not the case.

• Brown leather strap with ecru stitching is sooooo good looking, warm and Italianate...Very 1940s English Patient (movie) palate looking...I'm surprised the hot-stamped OP logo kind of looks cool, and is much more low key than it looks in photos...Also the tapered strap is very comfortable and the highest quality OEM Panerai strap I have ever seen. I think one of the reasons it works so well is the strap is 4mm thick, so it is beefy, just like the watch...

• The curved and polished trapezoidal polished steel buckle gives the watch a dressier, more formal/modern industrial design look. Buckle is really beautiful...

Compared to the PAM 372

• The case is NOT the same as a PAM 372. The PAM 587 has taller, wider, curvier, squarer, thicker lugs, which look more balanced and masculine, and also have much longer flat bottoms. The top to bottom (from lug to lug) has the 587 measuring just a tad bit shorter (1/3MM)

• Wears smaller than a PAM 372, and looks much dressier as well. I am including the photo below that show a Luminor Panerai PAM00372 next to the Radiomir Marina Militare PAM00587. The 372 is considered by many Paneristi to be "THE Panerai", but I think that quotient has just changed with the advent of the PAM 587. The PAM 587 makes the 372 look almost contrived, whereas the 587 looks much more balanced and organic, and more complete in a less-is-more kind of way.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."
–Leonardo da Vinci

• The pointed pencil hands look super-sharp and clean, which give the watch a great streamline, clean art-deco, Populuxe look...Arguably Panerai should replace the hands on the PAM 372 with these significantly improved hands. These pencil hands are not dauphine hands, but they have that great 1950s, long and lean elegant, pointed look...

• The 587 "Marina Militare" etching has a smaller font size, and looks more refined and elegant.

• This watch exudes warmth, understated sporty elegance and charisma.

• Extremely versatile to mix and match with everything from shorts and flip-flops to being worn with a suit.

• Insanely timeless, art-deco, Avant garde design, which has been beautifully updated and modernized by Panerai.

• Super clean, uncluttered BASE dial design is highly complemented by the simple 8MM winding crown. This watch is as simple as it gets, and the large dial makes it so easy to see the time at a glance.

• This is a TRUE Minimalist Masterpiece.

• The etched OP logo on the 8MM winding crown is beautifully executed, and highly dimensional.

• Super low-key, understated design. This watch is bold and outstanding, but in a quiet, reserved kind of way. Most people, I imagine won't recognize it is a Panerai for two different reasons. First, since it lacks the half-crescent crown guard, and secondly, since it does not say Panerai on the dial. Having the 'Marina Militare' designation is kind of like a reverse, reverse psychology, in the sense it will throw most people off. And that is kind of what the quiet appeal is of this watch. It's like a more gentlemanly Panerai. If the PAM372 is Sylvester Stallone, the PAM587 is Cary Grant. Some watches are about showing others who you are and what you have achieved. This watch is about showing yourself who you are, and not caring what other people think...

Vintage Rolex Design DNA

• Amazingly good-looking, handsome watch, with very Rolex Oyster Cushion-Case look. Basically this watch is very rich in Rolex DNA, including the 8MM Brevet 'Big Crown'. This might sound unusual, but in my mind all the vintage Panerai watches, since they were made by Rolex are basically Rolex watches. The best vintage inspired Panerai watches, including the PAM587 have so much art-deco Rolex design DNA, that in my mind they are amazing Rolex watches...

It is important to realize that Rolex and Panerai were once as close as brothers, and now in some ways they may seem like distant cousins. The Rolex watch pictured below is a 47MM Rolex Reference 6154, which was made in the early 1950s, and I put it next to the late 2014 PAM00587 to illustrate how similar the case DNA design is, as well as the sharp pencil hands. Obviously back in the 1930s through the 1950s, Panerai made their own trademark 3, 6, 9, 12 Sandwich dials in their Italian workshops.

The Rolex on the left was made just around the time of the Rolex Submariner model in the early 1950s, and shares its 8MM 'Big Crown', which is a great look. The Panerai PAM 587 shares this fantastic look, and I measured the crown diameter–just out of curiosity– which came in at 8.5MM. There is a tremendous amount of subtle design refinement in the Panerai what is not visible to the untrained eye, but this is both the beauty and mastery of Panerai today.

Despite being an immense fan of Panerai, at my core, I am even more of a Rolex fan, and the thing that originally drew me to modern Panerai was the awesome Rolex Design DNA...Hopefully at some time in the future, we will once again see Rolex and Panerai collaborate together, and pick-up where they left off...

Ironically the vintage Rolex-Made Panerai model 6152/1 which the PAM00587 is based upon, was the Panerai model that first got me to fall madly in love with the Panerai brand.

Having worn a PAM00372 for a year now, was basically a stop gap to my grail watch which is really a Rolex Made Vintage Panerai Reference 6154. The PAM00587 is so close to the Reference 6154 with the only difference being the raised 'high-hat' crystal v. the domed low-profile crystal like you would see on a PAM00127 'Fiddy'.

The photo below shows me years ago wearing the original Rolex Made Panerai 6152/1, which the PAM00587 is based upon...

In the days and weeks to come, we will be doing an in-depth review of this instant-classic limited-edition Panerai. The photo below of the 587 is on the best I have seen so far. You can learn much more about this beauty from the first preview article I wrote on the PAM 587.

From Russia With Love!!!

ALL-NEW PANERAI

Radiomir Panerai
Tribute To Paneristi Russia
1940s 47MM Case PAM00622

Again, I am stunned!!!! Panerai is so full of surprises lately!!! They just introduced a super-limited edition Radiomir Panerai and only made 60 of them. This watch was made exclusively for the Russian market and is only available through the Panerai Boutique in Moscow, Russia. This model appears to be based upon the Rolex made Reference 6154 Radiomir, and is the very first example Panerai has made of this magnificent design.

Keep in mind Panerai just surprised us with the introduction of the PAM00587, which is based upon the Rolex Made Vintage Panerai Reference 6152, and now they stun us with this model based which appears to be based upon the Rolex Made Vintage Panerai Reference 6154, which has been nicknamed as "The Small Egiziano."

Some Preliminary Observations:

• The watch has a sapphire crystal v. a plexiglass crystal. Of course the vintage Panerai Reference 6154 had a plexiglass crystal. This stops this model from being 100% historically accurate. Contrast this with the all-new PAM00587, which has a plexiglass crystal that make it look more vintage. There are some advantages to having a sapphire crystal: For instance, it is scratch-proof. The general consensus is that plexiglass offers a warmer look.

PAM 622 v. PAM 587

I put together the graphic below to illustrate all the subtle differences between the PAM 622 and the PAM 587. It is amazing how similar yet different they look from the front view, yet their side profiles, which we can't see yet are very different.

• The "RADIOMIR PANERAI" dial designation uses a smaller font than on the original vintage, which slightly throws off the look of the dial and stops it from looking 100% vintage/authentic. In other words, it gives it a more modern look, which takes away from the otherwise vintage beauty.

• I am not crazy about the strap that it come on. I think it would be better if it had a strap like on the 372 or 587, which are both 4MM thick throughout. Instead the strap is padded in the middle. I have to see the watch in person, but his is just my initial impression.

• Has the double bar hour hand, which looks awesome, but never appeared on a Reference 6154, that I am aware of.

• I was really surprised to learn Panerai only made 60 units in this limited edition, but at the same time it doesn't surprise me, since Angelo Bonati and his team are so great at strategic marketing. I don't think it is a coincidence with the timing of this coming directly after the PAM00587 sold out internationally.

• I was also surprised that this model was launched in Moscow, as a "Tribute To Paneristi Russia". I know there are many, many passionate and loyal Panerai fans in Russia, and I am so happy for the select small group who had the chance to acquire what is arguably the coolest modern Panerai. I say this, because in my personal opinion, the Reference 6154 it is based upon is the coolest Panerai ever made!!!

• The "Swiss Made" designation on the bottom of the dial looks weird, as it is split between both sides of the "6" marker, and reads:

 "L SWISS6MADE L"

I believe this is historically inaccurate, as no Radiomir ever had that designation, nor did any vintage Panerai. This detail kind of throws off the dial just a little.

• My initial impression is that this watch is an absolute stunner. I would probably rate it at 97%, which is the same as my rating for the PAM00587. If the watch did not have the details I mentioned above, I probably would have given it a higher score. My best guess is that Panerai will likely launch a true 6154-like Reference at SIHH, or sometime in the future, that will be 100%. Just to be clear, even though I took away several points for the detail mentioned above, I think the overall shape of this watch is probably better than the PAM00587, since it is so much more streamlined and lower in profile due to the much lower crystal height. Would I prefer this watch over a PAM 587? Hard to say. It might be six of one, and a dozen of the other, and without seeing them side by side, I can't say for sure. My gut tells me I would rater have the PAM00622, because it is closer to the 6154. If this does not make sense, it should after you read the article below I wrote about the PAM00587.

I will be expanding this article as new information and photos come in!!!!! One thing is for certain, and that is Panerai seems to be moving full-spear ahead with the awesome 1940s case design...

An Amazing Career With Panerai Keep The Time Of His Life

Pierce Bronsnan's career achievements are awe inspiring, and he is certainly one of the coolest guys to ever wear a Panerai watch, as well as at leastone of two actors who have played James Bond, that wear Panerai, the other being Sir Sean Connery. In the photo below, we see Pierce wearing on of his trademark Panerai Luminor watches.

Pierce Brosnan is one of the great action/adventure actors of his generation. Brosnan not only starred as James Bond for several movies, but has been in some other great movies, including The Thomas Crown Affair, as well as After The Sunset. In After The Sunset, Pierce wore a Stainless Steel Luminor [Reference PAM 00091] as seen below. The PAM 00091 could easily be mistaken for the later PAM00297, and they are similar, but not the same reference.

After The Sunset  is an action/adventure/comedy move which debuted in 2004, and had an all-star cast including; Pierce Brosnan, Salma Kayek, Woody Harrelson and Don Cheadle. On could argue that the After The Sunset plot was based loosely on Cary Grant's original To Catch A Thief movie.

The photo below shows the Panerai Luminor Marina Reference PAM00091 model that Pierce Brosnan wore in After The Sunset.

The photo below shows Pierce Brosnan just hanging out in real life, wearing his Panrerai, which he wore in After The Sunset.
